MEN’S RUGBY LEAGUE: York Acorn boosted their National Conference survival hopes with a surprise 34-24 win over Thatto Heath to move within a point of Rochdale Mayfield, beaten 34-26 at bottom club Egremont, and Pilkington Recs, who were edged out 26-22 by Lock Lane. Table toppers West Hull lost 24-12 at Wath Brow, second placed Hunslet Parkside saw off Leigh Miners 18-0 and Siddal overcame Thornhill 42-20.

MEN’S FOOTBALL: Dundee needed two late goals to beat bottom club Arbroath 4-2 and moved top of the Scottish Championship, a point clear of Inverness, who brushed off Cove Rangers 4-1. Queens Park beat Partick Thistle 3-2 in Glasgow’s big derby, Andy Murdoch’s 85th minute strike earned Ayr a 2-2 draw with Hamilton and Raith bagged their first goals of the season in a 2-1 win over Greenock Morton.

MEN’S RUGBY UNION: New Zealand scored two late tries to come from behind and end their losing run with a 35-23 win over South Africa in the second round of The Rugby Championship. Argentina thumped Australia 48-17 to top the four team tournament on points difference from the Wallabies. Argentina travel to face the All Blacks in Christchurch and Australia host South Africa in a fortnight.

MEN’S RUGBY LEAGUE: NRL leaders Penrith lost only their third game of the season, going down 16-0 to Melbourne, but second placed North Queensland failed to take advantage with a 32-18 loss at the Roosters. Cronulla brushed off bottom club Wests 36-12, Brisbane beat Newcastle 28-10 and the NZ Warriors thumped Canterbury 42-18. South Sydney romped to a 28-0 win in Parramatta, Gold Coast shocked Manly 44-24 and Canberra edged St George 24-22.
