Sport in brief: August 2, 2022

WOMEN’S FOOTBALL: Euro 2022 match-winner Chloe Kelly says she was always going to take off her shirt to celebrate Sunday’s decisive goal but was briefly worried VAR might ruin the moment.

After Kelly scored from close range, she went to take her shirt off before hesitating as referee Kateryna Monzul communicated with her other officials but, once the goal was awarded, the 24-year-old whipped off her jersey in scenes reminiscent of Sergio Aguero’s celebrations in 2012 to create a lasting image.

“It’s the best yellow card I have ever received,” Kelly told ITV’s Good Morning Britain.

MEN’S FOOTBALL: West Ham will face either Danish club Viborg FF or B36 Torshavn of the Faroe Islands in a play-off  for a place in the Europa Conference League.

David Moyes’s side will be at home in the first leg on August 18, and face a trip to either Denmark or the Faroes seven days later.

Viborg and B36 face each other over two legs today and in a week’s time, with the winner taking on the Hammers.

The Hammers qualified for Europe’s third-tier competition by finishing seventh in the Premier League.

COMMONWEALTH GAMES: Wales kept their men’s pairs bowls title, beating England 19-18, at Victoria Park in Leamington Spa.

Daniel Salmon and Jarrad Breen celebrated wildly after England pair Jamie Walker and Sam Tolchard had battled back from 15-6 down to level at 16-16 with four ends remaining, but Tolchard missed the final bowl as Salmon and Breen secured Wales’ second gold medal of Birmingham 2022.

Salmon said: “I always wanted to win at one Commonwealth Games, but to win two golds is just beyond my wildest dreams.”
