Sport in brief: August 8, 2022

Men’s rugby league: West Hull battled past second-placed Hunslet Parkside 16-8 to seal the National Conference championship on Saturday.

At the other end of the table Egremont’s miserable season continued with a 98-4 hammering against Lock Lane that confirmed their relegation.

Thornhill saw off York Acorn 20-10, Siddal eased to a 38-8 win over Leigh Miners, Wath Brow beat Thatto Heath 32-25 and Pilkington Recs won 30-20 at Rochdale Mayfield.

Men’s football: Partick Thistle top the Scottish Championship on goal difference after Brian Graham’s late goal earned them a 1-1 draw with Hamilton.

Raith are the only team without a point after they were beaten 1-0 by Dundee, Arbroath drew 0-0 with Inverness, Ayr needed Dipo Akinyemi’s injury time penalty to squeeze past Queens Park 3-2 and Greenock Morton saw off Cove Rangers 1-0.

Men’s rugby union: New Zealand lost their third test match in a row as they went down 26-10 to South Africa in the opening match of the Rugby Championship in Mbombela.

Handre Pollard top scored for the Springboks with 16 points from the boot. The tournament’s other game saw Australia score five tries to come from behind and secure a 41-26 win over Argentina. 

Men’s rugby league: NRL leaders Penrith got back on track with a 26-6 win at Canberra to remain six points clear of North Queensland who saw off Canterbury 28-14.

Third-placed Cronulla edged out St George 24-18, Melbourne swept aside bottom club Gold Coast 32-14 and Parramatta won 36-20 at Manly Warringah.

The Roosters comfortably beat Brisbane 34-16, South Sydney thumped the NZ Warriors 48-10 and Newcastle held on to beat Wests 14-10.
