MEN’S TABLE TENNIS: England’s Liam Pitchford had to settle for silver as he lost to India’s Sharath Kamal Achanta in the men’s singles table tennis final at the Commonwealth Games today.

Pitchford won the first game, but Achanta, the bronze medallist four years ago on Australia’s Gold Coast, bounced back to seal a 4-1 victory and take gold.

MEN’S RUGBY UNION: South Africa wing Kurt-Lee Arendse was suspended for four weeks on Monday for his highly dangerous mid-air tackle on New Zealand fly-half Beauden Barrett in the Rugby Championship opener.

Arendse was given a red card after the 74th-minute incident on Saturday and also taken off on a stretcher with a suspected concussion.

He will only be available again for the Springboks’ last game of the Rugby Championship at home to Argentina.

MEN’S SQUASH: Declan James claimed Commonwealth Games gold in the men’s squash doubles just two months after a three-inch tear in his quad left him fearing he would not make Birmingham 2022.

James and playing partner James Willstrop defeated English compatriots Daryl Selby and Adrian Waller 11-3 7-11 11-9 in an epic final in which the momentum switched on several occasions.
