Scottish Labour calls on SNP to protect jobs

SCOTTISH Labour is urging First Minister Nicola Sturgeon to work with the party to protect people suffering from a dramatic loss of income during the Covid-19 pandemic.

With more than 300,000 people still on furlough in Scotland, the party’s finance spokesman Daniel Johnson said Ms Sturgeon must “pull out all the stops” to protect jobs when the scheme ends later this year.

He encouraged ministers to adopt Labour manifesto pledges on employment, which included a jobs guarantee for young workers and the long-term unemployed, to support 119,000 working age people currently without a job.

Mr Johnson said: “The financial wellbeing of hundreds of thousands of Scots is on the line and the SNP’s jobs plan is simply not fit for purpose.

“Scottish Labour is calling on the SNP to work with us to build a fairer economic recovery.”

The plea came after Ms Sturgeon confirmed she had held separate talks with Scottish Labour leader Anas Sarwar and the Scottish Greens over a potential co-operation agreement following this month’s parliamentary election.
