Veteran Labour councillor quits party ‘in anger’ over leadership

A VETERAN Labour councillor has quit the party “in frustration and anger” over its leadership.

Trade unionist Tony Randerson, from Scarborough District Council in East Yorkshire, made the decision following actions by Labour leader Sir Keir Starmer.

He said: “After a lifetime as a supporter and over 30 years as a member of the Labour Party I cannot in all conscience remain a party member and as of today I have torn up my Labour membership card and resigned from the Labour Party.”

Mr Randerson accused Sir Keir of “treating the ‘rank and file’ members of the Labour Party with contempt; he is either suspending or dismissing long-standing and hard-working members on a whim.”

He said the “last straw” was national Labour officials’ decision to exclude another local Labour councillor from the “long list” of parliamentary candidates for the Scarborough and Whitby constituency.

Mr Randerson, who is a former regional officer of Unite, said he is to join the newly formed Social Justice Party in East Yorkshire and will stand against Labour in a forthcoming council by-election.
