TRANSPORT union TSSA threw its weight yesterday behind Scottish Labour's motion demanding that the government exercises the break clause in Abellio's ScotRail franchise.
The clause will be debated by MSPs tomorrow and the union’s leader Manual Cortes hopes they will set aside "political dogma" and vote for what is best for rail users and taxpayers.
Mr Cortes said ScotRail had gone "from bad to worse" under the SNP. Who will pay in the next election if they don't relieve commuters of their "rail misery?"
He said: "[ScotRail] failed its franchise agreement last quarter and then followed that up with an even worse month for punctuality and reliability.
"Yet [cabinet minister] Michael Matheson’s response to ScotRail’s bad performance was to issue Abellio a 12-month carte blanche to keep failing.
"If this motion passes, the Scottish government will be obliged to do what we all know it needs to do — operate the break clause and bring ScotRail back into public ownership.”
Last year, a TSSA report revealed that tickets could be more than 6 per cent cheaper with ScotRail in the public sector.
