Controversial MSP launches bid to lead Scottish Liberal Democrats

A CONTROVERSIAL Edinburgh MSP has launched a bid to become the next leader of the Scottish Liberal Democrats and looks likely to be elected unopposed.

Alex Cole-Hamilton, who represents Edinburgh West, ended two weeks of speculation when he announced today that he is seeking to replace long-time party leader Willie Rennie.

The MSP, one of only four remaining Lib Dems at Holyrood, is the first candidate to come forward and nominations are due to close on August 20.

Writing in the Edinburgh Evening News, he claimed that an opportunity exists for an alternative to the “extremes” of Scottish politics and said that he wants to “drive that alternative.”

Mr Cole-Hamilton’s candidacy comes just months after he was forced to apologise for mouthing “fuck you” at an SNP minister during a parliamentary committee session.

With so few Lib Dems remaining at Holyrood, he is unlikely to face any rivals for the party leadership, so he could be in charge within weeks.
