Sport in brief: January 17, 2025

MEN’S ICE HOCKEY:

Zach O’Brien netted twice as Cardiff Devils came from behind to see off an under-strength Katowice 6-3 in the Continental Cup on Thursday night.

Four members of the Polish team were denied entry to Britain due to visa problems.

The Devils, who finished third in last season’s competition, will pick up the trophy for the first time with a win over France’s Grenoble in the Welsh capital on Sunday.

WOMEN’S BASKETBALL:

It’s top against bottom in the Super League on Saturday evening, when unbeaten table-toppers Oaklands Wolves host defending champions London Lions in St Albans.

The Lions are a pale imitation of last year’s team, who also became the first British club to win the EuroCup, after they were forced into administration five months ago.

Durham meet Cardiff Met and second-placed Sheffield visit Leicester in tomorrow’s other games.

MEN’S RUGBY LEAGUE:

Despite signing a three-year contract with Hull FC at the end of last season, Jordan Abdul has left his home-town club without getting the chance to make another appearance for them.

Half-back Abdul had previously played for the club between 2014-18 before enjoying successful stints in the Super League at London, neighbours Hull KR, where he earned an England cap in 2021, and the Catalans Dragons.

MEN’S RUGBY UNION:

Leicester, Glasgow, Leinster and Northampton are already through to the Champions Cup last 16 as the tournament’s final round concludes this weekend.

Bristol must win at Clermont-Auvergne to have any chance of making it through, while Bath need to get something from their visit to unbeaten Leinster and Sale need a bonus point win over Toulon.

Harlequins must beat Glasgow to progress, but both Saracens and Munster only require a point.
