Ban on MPs from taking oil and gas money to be proposed by Labour's Burgon

RICHARD BURGON is set to present a Bill to ban MPs from taking oil and gas money, the Leeds East Labour MP revealed today.

Mr Burgon announced that he will bring a Bill to Parliament in the autumn to prevent MPs from accepting donations from oil and gas companies.

This comes after reports of high-profile Tories accepting donations from oil and gas firms.

New Chancellor Nadhim Zahawi is reported to have trousered a staggering £1.3 million from an oil company while still a backbench MP.

The Chancellor also received a final £285,000 “settlement payment” after he became a minister in 2018.

Mr Zahawi had a job with Gulf Keystone, an oil field in Iraqi Kurdistan which paid an eye-watering sum of over £1,000 per hour.

Although his income was declared, his total second job earnings are unknown because of parliamentary rules allowing him to advise firms through his consultancy Zahawi & Zahawi.

Home Secretary Priti Patel collected £140,000 in donations in the first half of this year, with all the money coming from donors with significant fossil fuel and offshore energy interests.

The largest single donation was £100,000 from Andurands Ventures Ltd, a firm run by one of the world’s leading oil traders, Pierre Andurand.

The hedge fund manager made headlines in 2020 when he successfully predicted that oil prices would hit negative numbers, making a significant profit in the process.

At the time, a spokesperson for Ms Patel said: “All donations are declared in the usual and proper way.”

Mr Burgon said: “The same oil and gas giants behind soaring bills have taken us to the cliff edge on climate change.

“These companies have too much influence on our economy and politics.

“When Parliament returns after the summer, I’ll introduce a Bill to ban MPs from taking oil and gas money.”
