Sport in brief: June 8, 2023

MEN’S BASKETBALL: Nikola Jokic and Jamal Murray became the first team-mates in NBA history to bag double figures in points scored, rebounds and assists as the Denver Nuggets swept aside Miami Heat 109-94 to take a 2-1 lead in the best of seven finals.

Murray finished as top-scorer with 34 points whilst Jimmy Butler led the way for Miami with 28. The fourth game is in Miami on Saturday morning.

MEN’S FOOTBALL: Although their form has been inconsistent, reigning champions Shamrock Rovers enjoy a four-point lead at the top of the League of Ireland prior to tonight’s clash with bottom club UCD.

Friday evening’s other fixtures pit second against fourth at the Brandywell as Derry host Bohemians, third-placed St Patrick’s are in Drogheda, improving Cork City take on Dundalk and Sligo Rovers are at Shelbourne.

NETBALL: Regular season Superleague champions London Pulse face Surrey Storm, who finished nine points behind them in fourth, at the Copper Box Arena on Friday evening in the first of the play-off semi finals.

Reigning champions Manchester Thunder travel to Loughborough Lightning in tonight’s second semi after the Lightning only secured second place, and home advantage, over Manchester on points difference. Finals day will take place at the Copper Box on Sunday.

MEN’S CRICKET: The West Indies will complete a whitewash of the United Arab Emirates with a win in Friday’s final leg of their three-match one-day series after easing to a 78-run win in the second match.

Brandon King top-scored with 64 for the Windies in their total of 306 all out whilst Ali Naseer, coming in at number 7, was again the highest scorer for the UAE, with 57, as they struggled to 228-7.
