Wales in brief: February 20, 2024

STRIKING DOCTORS: BMA Cymru junior doctors are striking for three days from Wesnesday at hospitals across Wales in their action to force the Welsh government to improve its 5 per cent pay offer.

BMA Wales co-chairs Dr Oba Babs-Osibodu and Dr Peter Fahey said: “Wales cannot afford to lose any more doctors, and we can no longer accept the unacceptable.

“We would always be willing to return to the table if a credible offer was put forward.”

NUCLEAR POWER: The Senedd’s economy, trade & rural affairs committee is calling on the Tory government to take an urgent decision on the future of nuclear development on Anglesey.

The committee’s latest report analyses the role of nuclear energy in Wales’s economy and concludes that the nuclear industry could provide thousands of jobs and billions of pounds of investment.

In September 2020, Japanese firm Hitachi withdrew from a project to build a new nuclear power station on the island.

STANDING CHARGES: The Welsh government today called for the abolition of standing charges from domestic energy bills in its response to energy regulator Ofwat’s consultation.

“The charges are fundamentally unfair to low-income and low-usage customers,” it said.

It also emphasised the need for a more holistic review of retail charges to include the introduction of a social and medical tariff and the rebalancing of gas and electricity costs.

SELECTIVE SCRUTINY: Plaid Cymru leader Rhun ap Iorwerth quizzed First Minister Mark Drakeford today about the impact of the recession and wanted to know what Sir Keir Starmer’s Labour Party was pledging for fair funding for Wales if he won the general election.

Mr Drakeford said the Plaid leader “frequently asks me for answers from people who are not in the Senedd” and invited Mr ap Iorwerth to “ask me a question that is part of my responsibility.”
