SNP demands investigation into reports that PM tried to hire Carrie Johnson said chief of staff

THE SNP has written to the Cabinet Secretary demanding an investigation into reports that the Prime Minister tried to hire  then-girlfriend Carrie Symonds as his chief of staff.

The letter follows confirmation from Downing Street that Boris Johnson’s office intervened after the Times reported on the story that he tried to hire his wife Ms Symonds on a £100k-plus per year role.

The story then disappeared from later editions of the newspaper, and did not appear on its online edition.

SNP Cabinet Office spokesperson, Brendan O’Hara, wrote to Simon Case asking for clarification on whether the story is true.

Mr O’Hara said: “This is yet another deeply murky story that Boris Johnson finds himself in the middle of, and another report that a Tory minister offered cushy, taxpayer-funded role to their nearest and dearest.

“Given the stench of cronyism surrounding the Tories at Westminster, and the multiple occasions in which Boris Johnson has lied, cheated, wilfully broken the law, and offered senior roles to close allies and friends, it is incumbent on the Cabinet Secretary to take this latest allegation seriously.

“The public deserve answers over whether Boris Johnson as foreign secretary used his position to get his girlfriend a £100k job — funded by the taxpayers.”
