TENS of thousands of people joined a demonstration on Wednesday organised by lorry drivers and other trade unionists in the first major protest so far this year against conservative Argentinian President Mauricio Macri’s austerity agenda.
Working people continue to lose purchasing power to a high inflation rate and are frustrated by layoffs, rising fuel and transport costs and reduced utilities subsidies.
President Macri, who took office in 2015, claims his austerity programme is necessary to attract foreign investment and boost the economy.
Bank workers recently went on strike to demand higher salaries amid galloping inflation and the government struggled to contain angry December protests over an attack on pensions that triggered a general strike.
“Stop carrying out policies that starve the most sensitive part of our society — our dear pensioners and … that starve the future of our children,” lorry drivers’ union leader Hugo Moyano told a crowd that gridlocked traffic in several streets and avenues of Buenos Aires.
