THOUSANDS of people across Britain shouted with one voice today: “Show Racism the Red Card.”

They took part in Britain’s fourth annual national Wear Red Day to express their opposition to racism, especially on football terraces.

Schoolchildren, office workers, trade unionists, students and others donned red T-shirts and other items of red clothing for the day to show their support for Show Racism the Red Card’s (SRTRC) work and donated £1 each to the group.

Major centres showed their support by lighting up iconic structures in red, including Liverpool’s Liver Building, Millennium Bridge Newcastle in Newcastle, Alnwick Castle Gardens, St Mary’s Lighthouse, The Foundation of Light and all Sunderland City Council’s buildings and assets.

SRTRC was formed in January, 1996, to involve high-profile sports stars in campaigning against racism in football and in society.

Today it works as an educational charity, taking its anti-racist message to 50,000 young people a year.

Dominic Healey, campaign support worker with the group, said: “Our work is essential and the demand for our expertise is constantly growing.

“Wear Red Day is our annual day of action to raise awareness of the work that we do and to raise funds to allow us to continue.

“Our fundraising team and our wonderful volunteers have spent the last few weeks frantically building and dispatching fundraising packs to over 1,300 schools, universities and businesses the length and breadth of the UK.”

A campaign spokesman said: “We’ve been doing it for four years now and this is definitely the biggest one yet in terms of promotion and response.”

It is active overseas, and messages of support came in yesterday from as far away as Brazil.
