DRIVERS working for Uber, Bolt and Addison Lee are set to log off on Valentine’s Day to demand better pay and conditions.
Called by the IWGB union, the action has gained the backing of driver groups in cities including London, Birmingham, Manchester, Nottingham and Brighton.
In 2021, the Supreme Court ruled that Uber drivers are entitled to receive basic rights like holiday pay.
But drivers report that Uber responded to the introduction of the rights by cutting rates.
Saifullah Hussainkhel, an Uber driver for 12 years, said: “I have to work 30 hours a week just to cover my driving costs, before I can even start earning money to take home and support my family.
“What kind of lives are we leading if we don’t have the time to see our families, to exercise, to rest, or take a single holiday?”
Drivers are also calling for better safety measures and support for victims of assault.
As part of a demonstration outside London’s City Hall next Friday, drivers will hold a vigil for Gabriel Bringye who was killed by a passenger four years ago.
