Price makes final appearance a Plaid Cymru leader at First Minister’s Questions

PLAID CYMRU leader Adam Price made his final appearance as party leader at First Minister’s Questions today, before being replaced today by acting leader Llyr Gruffydd.

Mr Price said that he has asked over 400 questions to two first ministers since he became leader of the party in September 2018.

Addressing First Minister Mark Drakeford, he said: “Leading a party is not an easy task, but it is even more difficult to lead a nation — your commitment and personal sacrifice, particularly over recent challenging years, are a source of gratitude from all of us.”

Mr Price, who has resigned following a damning report about bullying and misogyny in his party, likened himself to a promising student receiving a mark from a disappointed teacher.

“I’ve always treated this aspect of the role with the seriousness it deserves,” he said.

“Good government needs good scrutiny, and accountability is the bedrock of any democracy.”

He explained he wanted to see a much more representative Welsh Parliament as the co-operation agreement promised reform and more Senedd members.

“We are two socialists from Carmarthenshire, hewn from the same root, on the left wing of both our parties, who have ended up implementing policies in many areas more radical than either of our manifestos,” Mr Price said.

Mr Drakeford replied that the beauty of democracy is to disagree on many issues but “there lies an enormous amount of agreement about the purpose of politics here in Wales.”

The First Minister also referred to the Senedd reform legislation, pledging “to make sure that the people who arrive here in the future fully reflect the diversity and the nature of today’s Wales.”
