Tosh McDonald elected to Doncaster council

ASLEF president Tosh McDonald has been elected to Doncaster Council for Labour.

He will be standing down as the train drivers’ union president in December after serving in the role for four years and does not plan on returning to his job as a train driver with Northern Rail.

A by-election in Doncaster held on June 14 was caused by the retirement through ill-health of Labour councillor John McHale.

Mr McDonald polled 1,084 votes in the Town ward, more than the total of the four other candidates combined.

The Tory candidate came fourth, behind the Greens and a right-wing Yorkshire Party candidate. The Lib Dem came fifth.

Mr McDonald, who is a supporter of Jeremy Corbyn, is known and respected nationally in the labour and trade union movement.

Labour holds 43 of the 55 seats on the council.
