Trump must be held accountable for Soleimani assassination, Iran says on anniversary of killing

FORMER US president Donald Trump must be tried for the assassination of General Qasem Soleimani, Iran said today as it claimed to have identified more than 120 suspects in his killing.

“No individual, institution, country or political faction involved in the assassination of General Soleimani must be able to enjoy impunity,” Iranian human rights official Kazem Gharibabadi said.

He was speaking on the second anniversary of the Quds Force Commander’s assassination by a US drone strike near Baghdad International Airport.

Mr Gharibabadi claimed that 125 US citizens, mostly government officials, had been identified as suspects in the “terrorist act.”

A number of countries have been asked to provide Iran with documents and information related to the incident, he said.

“The Islamic Republic of Iran is determined to co-operate with Iraq, as the country where the crime took place, to identify all perpetrators, sponsors and plotters, and bring them to justice,” Mr Gharibabadi said.

He said that Mr Trump cannot be immune from prosecution, having admitted to ordering the drone strike.

“His confession is considered as a credible document in international courts,” the lawyer said, adding that Iran would pursue the case according to its Islamic penal code.

“General Soleimani was on a non-military operation on the night of his martyrdom. He had departed for Iraq carrying a message about regional issues.

“We believe the terrorist act of his assassination can be an example of a crime against humanity.”

It was believed that Gen Soleimani may have been considering entering political life before his execution, with some analysts saying that he may have been lined up as a future president, though he always played down such suggestions.
