‘Prime Minister and officials broke lockdown laws,’ Major says

SIR JOHN MAJOR hit out today at the “corrosive” effect of the lockdown rule-breaking in Downing Street and ministers’ response.

In a hard-hitting speech to the Institute for Government, the former prime minister condemned “foolish behaviour” and the “evasive” tactics of ministers faced with the revelations of lockdown-breaking gatherings at No 10 and across Whitehall.

Sir John said: “At No 10, the Prime Minister and officials broke lockdown laws.”

Ministers made themselves “look gullible and foolish” with their “brazen excuses,” he said, and this had left the government appearing “distinctly shifty.”

Sir John continued: “If lies become commonplace, truth ceases to exist.

“The charge that there is one law for the government and one for everyone else is politically deadly and it has struck home.”

His comments coincided with lawyer Adam Wagner, who has been studying Covid-19 regulations, saying that Boris Johnson could incur a £10,000 fine if he is found to have breached lockdown rules.

The Prime Minister has refused to say whether he will resign if fined by police.
