Two Birmingham mosques attacked with catapults

ARMED police were deployed in Birmingham on Wednesday night after two mosques were attacked with catapults.

Officers were called to the Masjid Qamarul Islam mosque on Fosbrooke Road, Small Heath, at around 10pm and the al-Hijrah mosque on Hob Moor Road 20 minutes later.

Both buildings were hit by ball bearings that smashed windows during evening prayers.

West Midlands Police said firearms officers had been deployed as a precaution and the bearings recovered were thought to be from a heavy-duty catapult. They said the motive for the attacks was not yet clear.

The incidents happened the day after Salih Khater, 29, was arrested in the wake of a silver Ford Fiesta crashing into a security barrier in Westminster, having hit cyclists and pedestrians.

Nassar Mahmood, a trustee of Birmingham Central Mosque, said Muslims are facing “unprecedented” levels of Islamophobia and urged the media not to speculate about any motive for the Westminster incident.
