Men's Football Victory helps Tottenham inch closer to Champions League qualification

TOTTENHAM crept closer to Champions League football next season after picking up three points at Wembley in a 2-0 win over Watford last night.

Spurs are competing for a top four finish, with Chelsea eyeing up the prize of competing in the prestigious cup from September and not much between the two teams and limited games to go.

Chelsea currently sit fifth with 66 points, while Spurs have the edge over their rivals tallying up to 71 in fourth place.

Dele Alli and Harry Kane were among the goals with England manager Gareth Southgate watching on with the World Cup in mind and another familiar face to Southgate, Kieran Trippier, bagged himself an assist .

The Spurs full back said: “I got an assist today. I try and create as much as I can for my teammates and it was a good result for us tonight.

“I thought the win was the most important thing, but I don’t think we played as well as we can do. We were sloppy in the first half, but we got the win and that’s all that matters at this stage of the season.

“Three massive games coming up, we need to win every game now, that’s our mind set. West Brom will be a tough game next week. We will go there full of confidence and try and get the three points.”

Tottenham manager Mauricio Pochettino praised the defender, saying: “I think our full backs were fantastic this season. If you see the stats, we have great quality there. I think Trippier is one of the best English full backs in the Premier League. He deserves a lot of credit.”

Pochettino went on to reflect on the match, saying: “Today was a must-win game. During the whole season, it’s difficult to keep playing good football. Watford created good chances. I think [Hugo] Lloris was fantastic, showing why he is one of the best keepers in the world. There is no doubt about that, a big satisfaction with the clean sheet.

“We were all disappointed with the defeat to Manchester United. It will be a very successful season if we finish in the top four. I’m satisfied with the mentality. West Brom fight a lot. If we want to win there, we need to be ready to fight because they are strong.”
