ALGERIAN authorities have reported that 73 candidates are seeking to stand in controversial presidential elections scheduled for July 4 despite a large-scale boycott of the poll by opposition forces.
In a statement, the Interior Ministry confirmed the list included 70 independent candidates and the leaders of three political parties; the National Republican Alliance, the Future Front and the Algerian Movement for Justice and Development.
They are seeking to take over from former President Abdelaziz Bouteflika, who was forced to step down in the face of mass protests over plans to seek a fifth term of office.
Protests and strike action has continued as Algerians seek to sweep away the entire corrupt regime and those associated with the former president.
They plan to boycott the July 4 poll and oppose any voting under the supervision of symbolic figures of Mr Bouteflika’s regime, demanding transparency and safeguards against corruption.
The popular movement is demanding the resignation of interim president Abdelkader Bensalah and the prime minister Noureddine Bedoui saying “they cannot be entrusted in the organisation of fair and democratic elections.”
Protests continued in the capital Algiers yesterday with the country hitting an impasse over the way forward post-Bouteflika.
