Access to legal abortions ends in Mississippi as state ban takes effect

LEGAL abortions are no longer available in Mississippi with its only clinic shutting last night.

The US state’s challenge to the landmark 1973 Roe v Wade Supreme Court judgement establishing a constitutional right to abortion succeeded last month, ending US women’s right to terminate pregnancies under federal law and handing the matter to individual states.

On Tuesday Judge Debbra Halford rejected a lawsuit from the clinic arguing that Mississippi’s so-called “trigger law” banning abortion violated the state’s own constitution, meaning it comes into force today.

Thirteen US states have abortion bans in place that awaited a reversal of Roe v Wade to be enforceable. A Florida ban on abortions after 15 weeks came into force on Tuesday, and other states are seeing legal battles over when and whether the bans will kick in.

Earlier this week, US President Joe Biden said he expected some states to seek to arrest women trying to travel out of state for abortions, and said federal authorities would protect their right to do so.
