Argentinian mothers’ group marches for Maduro

ARGENTINA’S Mothers of Plaza de Mayo dedicated their 2,127th march to President Nicolas Maduro and the people of Venezuela.

The association, comprised of the relatives of the thousands of Argentinians disappeared under the military dictatorship between 1976 and 1983, have marched every Thursday since 1997.

The “march of resistance” was also protesting the attacks against Venezuela from the United States and regional right-wing governments which have intensified since the inauguration of Mr Maduro last week.

This week those marching flew Venezuelan flags alongside their traditional blue and white insignia as they gathered outside the presidential palace.

President of the Mothers of Plaza de Mayo, Hebe de Bonafini, said: “I dedicate our march to the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela and to its people,” warning that the US wants a war in order to establish a military base on the border with Venezuela.

“We celebrate the triumph of democracy in Venezuela and embrace its revolutionary people, who keep the eternal flame of Hugo Chavez alive,” she said.

Ms Bonafini blasted the neoliberal policies of Argentinian President Mauricio Macri with an economic crisis leading to job losses, spiralling costs and cuts to public services.

Argentina received the biggest loan in the history of the  International Monetary Fund (IMF) last year which tied the country into stringent conditions, including a commitment to a zero-deficit budget.

However Ms Bonafini warned that it primarily “affects the working classes, the most impoverished, those who suffer the most.”

She called for regional unity against the US interventionist agenda, saying: “There is no formula but to move forward and advance in integration.”
