Bolivia cuts off ties with Cuba

CUBA accused the Bolivian coup administration of ceding to pressure from the US on Saturday after it cut diplomatic ties with the island nation the previous night.

Bolivia’s interim Foreign Minister Yerko Nunez announced that the country was cutting ties to Cuba on Friday, citing “interference” relating to the Cuban medical support programme.

Democratically elected president Evo Morales was ousted last November in what has been described as “a US-backed fascist coup.” He is currently in exile in Argentina.

His replacement Jeanine Anez has since escalated tensions with Cuba. Her attacks on the solidarity work carried out by Cuban health professionals are in line with an international campaign led by Washington.

The US on Thursday announced that it was to send an ambassador to Bolivia in order to restore relations for the first time in more than 11 years.

Cuba’s foreign ministry said of the US and Bolivia on Saturday: “The acting authorities unfurled a ferocious campaign of lies against Cuba ... in particular against the Cuban medical co-operation, inciting violence against our staff.”

It has led to the forced withdrawal of Cuban doctors working in Bolivia, with Cuban Foreign Minister Bruno Rodriguez Parrilla warning that 454,440 medical consultations have been lost as a result.
