Brazilian officers charged after standing on a black woman's neck in Sao Paolo

TWO Brazilian police officers have been suspended and face criminal charges after video footage circulated on social media showing one of them standing on the neck of a black woman in Sao Paolo.

The footage sparked outrage, leading to Joao Doria, governor of Sao Paolo state, calling an emergency press conference on Monday at which he insisted that his state “does not tolerate and will not tolerate any violent behaviour.”

His public statement came after the video clip was shown on the Fantastico television show on Brazil’s Globo Network.

According to TeleSur correspondent Nacho Lemus, the woman suffered a broken neck and other injuries.

“Last night, the Brazilian press published another video of police violence,” he said, adding that the victim was “a black merchant from the outskirts of Sao Paulo [who] suffered facial injuries, a broken leg and claims that she fainted four times.”

Mr Doria said: “The scenes shown in Fantastico are disgusting. The conduct of unnecessary violence by some police officers is unacceptable.”

He confirmed that they had been suspended and announced that, from August, at least 2,000 police would have body cameras.
