Cuba's Raul Castro awarded the Lenin Prize for contribution to socialism

COMMUNIST Party of Cuba leader Raul Castro has been awarded this year’s Lenin Prize for his outstanding contribution to promoting the ideas of socialism.

He was presented with the award by the Communist Party of the Russian Federation (CPRF) on April 22, which marked the 149th birthday of Vladimir Lenin, the leader of the Russian Revolution of October 1917.

Party leader Gennady Zyuganov said that “Cuba’s brotherly people are an example,” saying the decision to bestow this year’s Lenin Prize to Mr Castro was due to “his outstanding contribution to the dissemination of the ideals of socialism.”

Mr Castro played a leading role as a commander in the Cuban Revolution and was one of only 12 fighters who reached the safety of the Sierra Maestra mountains after the Granma landed on shore in November 1956.

He became president of Cuba in February 2008 before stepping down in April 2018.

Ivan Melnikov, a member of the central committee of the CPRF, will travel to Cuba to officially bestow the recognition to Mr Castro during the International Workers’ Day festivities in Havana on May 1.
