UKRAINE WAR Emergency declared after brewery shelled in Donetsk

AT LEAST one person was killed and two people were injured as Ukrainian forces reportedly shelled a brewery in the eastern city of Donetsk on Wednesday evening.

The Emergency Situations Ministry of the Donetsk People’s Republic warned of an ammonia leak as a result of the attack, telling residents to stay indoors.

The toxic substance spread some two kilometres from the brewery. Inhaling ammonia can cause poisoning.

"Attention to the residents of the Kalininsky District of Donetsk: An accident damaged an ammonia pipeline, leaking ammonia, a hazardous chemical substance.

“That means people must stay indoors and take measures to make their apartments more air-tight. Breathe through gauze and cotton masks soaked in 5 per cent solution of citric or acetic acid,” the ministry advised.

More than 30 workers were on site when the missile struck late on Wednesday. It is not clear why the brewery was targeted.

Russia called for the UN security council to act after Ukraine shelled civilian areas in Donetsk for eight consecutive days.

It accused the Ukrainian armed forces of using banned cluster munitions known as petal bombs. A hotel housing international journalists was among the buildings targeted during the bombardment.
