HDP demand immediate release of 85 year old Kurdish woman on health grounds

TURKEY’S opposition People’s Democratic Party (HDP) demanded the immediate release of an 85-year-old Kurdish woman jailed for allegations of supporting terrorism, branding her treatment “scandalous and immoral.”

Sise Bingol was jailed in 2017 for four years and two months for “knowingly and willingly supporting a terrorist organisation” after being accused of membership of the outlawed Kurdistan Workers Party (PKK).

However despite medical reports warning that her health is seriously failing and that she cannot manage without the help and support of other prisoners, authorities sanctioned her continued detention.

The prison’s own forensic report disagreed with that of Mersin University Hospital and claimed Ms Bingol was faking her symptoms.

HDP MP for Mersin Ridvan Turan said: “She was admitted to a hospital but under isolation conditions. This treatment is not right. An 85-year-old woman was handcuffed to the bed and treated. That’s just immoral. Sise Bingol cannot take care of herself without the help of her fellow prisoners.”

He demanded her immediate release from so she can receive urgent treatment.

“When an AKP follower has a fingernail broken, they [the state] mobilise all their possibilities. But Kurds are left to die. The cruelty against Mother Sise must stop and she must be released immediately,” he said.
