Hundreds of French police clear out migrant camp

HUNDREDS of French police officers dismantled a makeshift refugee camp in the northern port city of Calais today.

Authorities of the Pas-de-Calais region said that about 500 people were removed from several structures near Calais hospital and taken to centres in northern France and elsewhere.

About 30 children were among those moved.

The operation came two days after violence between refugees and riot police in two locations, including near the hospital.

A second confrontation took place on the road leading to the port used by ferries crossing the Channel between France and Britain.

The storming of the camp was mandated by Interior Minister Gerald Darmanin and a court order. Authorities linked the move to the earlier violence, saying in a statement that the occupation of the structures “generated serious trouble to public order.”

But Francois Guennoc, head of the Auberge des Migrants charity, predicted that the dismantling of the camp will be ineffective.

“In any case people move, they go somewhere else,” he told the AFP news agency. “It’s an endless journey.”
