Iran's communists condemn British Foreign Secretary for backing US drive to war with Iran

IRAN’S communist Tudeh Party has condemned a “dangerous” shift towards war by the British government.

The party’s international secretary Navid Shomali said today that a statement by Foreign Secretary Dominic Raab yesterday had “repeated without qualification the declarations of the Saudi Arabian government and US administration in blaming Iran for the recent attacks on the Aramco facilities in Saudi Arabia.”

According to the Saudi authorities 18 drones and seven cruise missiles were deployed in an attack on an oilfield and processing facility.

The Houthi movement in Yemen, which the Saudis have been fighting for four years in a war that has killed tens of thousands of civilians, claims that it was responsible for the attack, but the US says it does not believe the claim and holds Iran responsible.

Mr Shomali said the Tudeh Party’s “key concern is that — without relying on any independent or impartial examination of what actually occurred — Mr Raab stated that ‘we are now confident that Iran was responsible. The evidence is clear, and there is no plausible alternative explanation.’

“Even the statement by Colonel Turki al-Maliki of the Saudi Defence Ministry only claimed that components retrieved from the Aramco facilities ‘point to Iran,” the party pointed out.

“At a time that all efforts should have been directed towards dampening down of the immediate tensions and exploring the diplomatic avenues available vis a vis the UN general assembly — and especially following the exit of warmonger-in-chief, John Bolton — the rhetoric has instead heated up with the hawks, on both sides, in the ascendancy. Iran and the US are now poised on the brink of a catastrophic conflict.

“The Tudeh Party of Iran, which has condemned unequivocally the attacks on the Saudi oil facilities, is nevertheless extremely concerned that the incident will be exploited by aggressors to justify a military attack on Iran.

“A military attack on Iran would be absolutely disastrous, could plunge the region into further conflict and initiate a regional war that could in turn ignite a worldwide conflict.”

The party said it was “unequivocally” opposed to any outbreak of war or “foreign intervention under any pretext.”
