Israeli warplanes target Gaza Strip

ISRAELI warplanes pummelled the besieged Gaza Strip this morning targeting a number of sites in what it claimed was a response to incendiary balloons being launched from the region.

Fighter jets, attack helicopters and tanks struck “a number of sites” belonging to Hamas including a military compound, underground infrastructures, and observation posts, according to an Israeli military statement.

The army threatened that it will continue “operating as necessary against attempts to harm Israeli civilians.”

But the strikes appeared to hit civilian targets, including buildings and fields.

Agricultural land east of Rafah city was fired upon by Israeli artillery whole helicopters strafed the town of Beit Lahia in the coastal region.

Israel often uses the excuse of rocket attacks and incendiary balloons to justify such assaults in which crops, farmland and civilian infrastructure are targeted.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu insisted: “Balloon terrorism will have a heavy price,” as he said Israel held Hamas responsible for any attack emanating from the Gaza Strip.

Some two million Palestinians live in Gaza which has been subjected to a 12-year blockade, with mass poverty and shortages of food and medical supplies.
