At least 3 killed in bombing raid over Tigray

AT LEAST three people have been killed in Mekele, capital of Ethiopia’s Tigray region, in a government bombing raid on the city.

The victims were all children from the same family, one resident of the city who did not wish to be named told journalists.

Ethiopian authorities said they had targeted “communication towers and equipment” and done their best to avoid civilian casualties. A comms blackout across the region makes verifying rival claims difficult.

Monday’s air raid follows the launch of a major state offensive to reclaim Tigray from the Tigray Defence Forces, which took control of Mekele in June.

The Tigray People’s Liberation Front dominated Ethiopian politics from 1991 to 2018, and declared Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed illegitimate in late 2020 because of the postponement of national elections due to Covid-19.

After it held regional elections in September 2020 in defiance of a government ban, Ethiopian troops invaded in November and the war since has claimed at least 10,000 lives.
