At least 46 people dead in suspected case of human trafficking in Texas

AT least 46 people have been found dead in an abandoned tractor-trailer in Texas in what has been described as “a horrific human tragedy.”

The bodies were found after a San Antonio city worker heard a cry for help from the back of the truck shortly before 6pm on Monday.

Another 16 people, including four children, were taken to hospital for treatment, Police Chief William McManus said.

The city’s Mayor Ron Nirenberg said it is believed that the dead were migrants with “families who were likely trying to find a better life.”

“This is nothing short of a horrific human tragedy,” he said.

The home countries of those who perished and how long they had been inside the container were not immediately known.

Some of the survivors were being treated in hospital with heat-related issues and dehydration, Fire Chief Charles Hood said.

“They were suffering from heatstroke and exhaustion,” he explained. “It was a refrigerated tractor-trailer, but there was no visible working AC unit on that rig.”

Investigations into the deaths were continuing while three arrests had been made. It was unclear whether they were in custody relating to the allegations of human trafficking.
