FRENCH President Emmanuel Macron faced censure today after left-wing opposition groups united against him in a bid to block his pension reforms, which have led to the biggest strikes in the country’s history.

Communist and socialist lawmakers from three parties agreed to present the motion to the National Assembly as clashes with security services and workers continued on the streets.

La France Insoumise leader Jean-Luc Melenchon, who was seen at the demonstrations in Paris yesterday, said they would try to block implementation of the legislation in the French parliament.

“Our duty is to resist by all means possible,” Mr Melenchon said: “This is due to our connection with the workers’ movement.”

Strikes and protests started in mid-December over the embattled French president’s neoliberal pension reforms, which unions warn will see people work longer and pay more into their pot.

The package is presented as France is being forced to fall into line with strict EU budget restrictions and comes ahead of it being forced to open its state-owned rail network to the private sector.

On Tuesday firefighters clashed with police who used water cannon against the public-sector workers in scenes that caused global outrage.

The motion will be heard on February 17.
