Malian president dissolves constitutional court in concession to protesters

MALI’S President Ibrahim Keita dissolved the constitutional court today, saying that the nomination of new members of the body would help end unrest over disputed legislative elections.

Anti-government riots exploded in the capital Bamako on Friday, with thousands demonstrating. The state TV station was occupied, some buildings were torched and four people were killed. Police attacked a follow-up demonstration on Saturday with tear gas.

The June 5 Movement, named after the first day of mass protests, is demanding the dissolution of the National Assembly and a reduction in presidential powers, though earlier demands that Mr Keita resign have been dropped.

Mr Keita gave a conciliatory address on Saturday, saying he was prepared for dialogue with the opposition.

The country is one of five in Africa’s Sahel region that is patrolled by French soldiers deployed in Operation Barkhane, an anti-Islamist military mission that began in 2014.
