More than 100 Palestinian journalists killed by occupying forces since 1972

MORE than 100 Palestinian journalists have been killed by Israeli occupying forces since 1972, a press freedom conference held in Ramallah has heard.

Palestinian Journalists Syndicate (PJS) general secretary Naser Abu Baker told those gathered that 102 were killed over the period, with 19 journalists killed since 2014.

Attacks on journalists in the occupied territories have intensified over the last year, he said with widespread violence including assaults by illegal settlers.

Mr Baker explained that in the first four months of 2019 the PJS has documented 136 Israeli attacks on Palestinian journalists.

There were 838 attacks in 2018, including the killing of Yaser Murataj and Ahmad Abu Hussein in Gaza.

Last year, 52 Palestinian journalists were arrested, and 47 were injured by live ammunition, 189 by tear gas canisters and 17 by rubber-coated metal bullets.

Today marks international World Press Freedom Day, where events will be held across the globe in memory of those who have lost their lives in the course of their work.
