Palestinian prisoner support group demands release of former hunger striker

PALESTINIAN prisoners’ rights activists have demanded the immediate release of former hunger striker Huzaifa Halabiya Bader after he was jailed without charge by an Israeli military court in Ofer on Tuesday.

Mr Bader’s latest period of administrative detention comes just months after a previous spell of incarceration, from which he was freed following a 67-day hunger strike.

Samidoun Palestinian Prisoner Solidarity Network appealed for international solidarity and demanded the immediate release of Mr Bader and all others being held on administrative detention orders in Israeli prisons.

It is estimated that about 500 out of the 5,000 Palestinian prisoners are held without charge or trial under the orders, which were first introduced by the pre-1948 British mandate administration.

Samidoun said that the use of administrative detention was “a colonial mechanism aimed to prevent, disrupt and target Palestinian resistance and organising in any form, removing leaders from their communities as they confront the daily violence of zionist colonialism, apartheid and occupation.”
