Protests against Palestinian Authority rock Ramallah

MAJOR protests took place in Ramallah again on Saturday as Palestinians demanded the resignation of Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas.

A rival demonstration in favour of his ruling Fatah party took place in Hebron.

Crowds in Ramallah chanted “the people want the fall of the regime,” a slogan from the 2011 “Arab spring,” and “Abbas, leave.”

Frustration has grown over the cancellation of long-overdue elections — Mr Abbas delayed them in April, citing Israel’s refusal to facilitate voting in East Jerusalem.

His critics say his real fear is that Fatah will lose ground to other organisations, such as the Islamist Hamas group, which has ruled Gaza since winning the last Palestinian elections 15 years ago.

And anger has exploded over the death of Abbas critic Nizar Banat during a police raid on his home. His family say he was beaten to death, and crowds are demanding the police chief be sacked and investigated.
