Shots fired at home of dissident republican

REPUBLICANS have condemned a gun attack at the house of well-known dissident Colin Duffy in Lurghan in the early hours of yesterday morning.

SDLP councillor Joe Nelson said the action could “not be tolerated” and called for the “people of violence” to be ostracised.

Sinn Fein councillor Liam Mackle condemned the attack and said: “Nobody has any rhyme or reason to be using guns today and I condemn it outright,” he said, urging those with information about the shooting to contact the police.

Mr Duffy was at home at the time of the incident and at least two shots are believed to have been fired into the house.

No injuries were reported and police appealed for information to help their ongoing investigations.

He has been previously targeted by the Ulster Volunteer Force which shot at him and two other men as they left Lurgan police station in 1990 after signing bail.

In 2012 Mr Duffy was found not guilty of killing two British soldiers at the former Massereene army barracks in Antrim who were shot dead as they took delivery of a pizza at the gates of the base in March 2009.
