Trump on verge of being impeached for second time in unprecedented House vote

US President Donald Trump faced further humiliation today as leading Republicans deserted him in the House and YouTube suspended him.

Mr Trump was on the verge of being impeached for a second time in an unprecedented House vote, a week after he encouraged a mob of loyalists to “fight like hell” against election results just before they stormed the Washington’s Capitol building in a deadly siege.

While Mr Trump’s first impeachment in 2019 brought no Republican votes in the House, a small but significant number, including third-ranking House leader Liz Cheney of Wyoming, broke with the party to join Democrats, saying that Mr Trump had violated his oath to protect and defend US democracy.

The collapse of Mr Trump’s final days in office has come with alarming warnings of more violence ahead by his far-right followers.

Democrat Joe Biden is due to be inaugurated on Wednesday (January 20).
