US President Donald Trump recognised Juan Guaido as Venezuela's leader in a provocative move soon after the usurper had sworn himself in as the country's interim president.
It is intended to ramp up the pressure on Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro emboldening opposition groups who organised demonstrations calling for his resignation, although they were dwarfed by the tens of thousands who turned out in support of the Bolivarian government.
