SUSPECTED Turkish-operated drones carried out air attacks that destroyed crops in Iraqi Kurdistan, authorities confirmed today.
No civilians were killed or injured in Tuesday morning’s attack by the unmanned aerial vehicles. The bombing raid in Sulaymaniyah province caused damage to vineyards and orchards belonging to local people.
The governor of the town of Mawet said: “The aircraft bombed the region twice today and flew over the region till noon.”
Turkey has escalated military operations in Iraqi Kurdistan in recent months. Operation Claw Eagle was launched in June, with the Ankara claiming that it was targeting the Kurdistan Workers Party (PKK), which has bases in the Qandil mountains.
But Turkish attacks have hit civilians in the border area, causing many to flee their homes. At the end of June, air strikes hit a picnic area in Sulaymaniyah where children were paddling in a pool.
The Maxmur refugee camp, home to 15,000 Kurds who fled Turkey in the 1990s, was also targeted, as was Sengal, the site of a 2014 act of genocide by Isis.
