UN monitoring situation of Farc leader following rearrest

UNITED Nations officials have called on Colombian authorities to guarantee the physical recovery of Alternative Revolutionary Force of Commons (Farc) leader Jesus Santrich who was rearrested just minutes after his release on Friday.

The office of the UN high commissioner for human rights (OHCHR) is monitoring the situation after Mr Santrich was detained on new charges of alleged drug trafficking.

He was arrested two minutes after his release from La Picota prison in Bogota, Colombia, where he had been held since his arrest in 2018.

Concerns were raised over Mr Santrich’s health after he was seen leaving jail in a wheelchair amid reports he had been seriously injured in the prison facility.

Critics have warned that his treatment is a violation of the peace agreement signed in 2016.

At least 128 former Farc members have been killed since the group disarmed as part of the deal.

In a statement the OHCHR said: “Despite the constant challenges that the peace process faces, it is essential, today more than ever, for Colombians to continue to work to preserve the progress made by the peace agreements.”
