US Democrats unite against Trump's racist tweets

US DEMOCRATS called out President Donald Trump’s racist and divisive tweets today which told four congresswomen to “go back” to the “broken and crime infested” countries he claims they came from.

The tweets targeted “the squad” of new House Democrats — Reps Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez of New York, Ilhan Omar of Minnesota, Ayanna Pressley of Massachusetts and Rashida Tlaib of Michigan.

They were all born in the US except for Ms Omar, who has been a permanent resident since gaining asylum in 1995.

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi responded by saying Mr Trump wants to “make America white again” and Ms Ocasio-Cortez said the Republican president “can’t conceive of an America that includes us.”

“Mr President, the country I ‘come from,’ & the country we all swear to, is the United States,” Ms Ocasio-Cortez tweeted. “You rely on a frightened America for your plunder.”

Ms Omar also directly addressed Trump, tweeting: “You are stoking white nationalism because you are angry that people like us are serving in Congress and fighting against your hate-filled agenda.”

House Democratic Caucus chairman Hakeem Jeffries said the “racial arsonist strikes again” and told the president to shut his reckless mouth.

Shortly after the tweets, and another defending harsh scenes at a border detention facility where hundreds of migrant men are being held in sweltering, foul-smelling conditions, Mr Trump left the White House to go golfing at his Virginia club.

Today Mr Trump described the display of unity between the Democrats, spanning the increasingly divided progressive and conservative wings of the party, as “so sad.”

It is not the first time Mr Trump has made racist remarks on his social media account, including claims that many Mexicans are “rapists.”

Many Republican politicians have refused to condemn his remarks despite the widespread outrage the tweets have provoked.
