BFAWU Conference ’18 We ‘mustn't underestimate’ the problems Labour will inherit from the Tories, Labour MP says

Ian Mearns MP told delegates at the Bakers, Food and Allied Workers Union conference Theresa May's government was the most ‘incompetent’ government he'd ever seen

LABOUR MP Ian Mearns warned trade unionists today that we “must never underestimate” the problems that a Labour government will inherit from the Tories.

Speaking to the Bakers, Food and Allied Workers Union (BFAWU) conference in Southport, Mr Mearns said that “the gravity of the situation we are facing” could not be forgotten.

The Gateshead MP said that in his 44 years as a member of the Labour Party, he has never seen such an “incompetent” government.

Pointing to the faltering social care system, the collapse of huge corporations, and the marked decline in the quality of public services, Mr Mearns accused the Tories of “laying waste” to the country.

He pointed out the irrelevance of the destruction of public services and asked, for what reason “our social care and youth services” are “struggling so dramatically” to meet the “changes of the age?”

Mr Mearns said: “Young people have to wait 18 months for a proper mental health assessment. If you’re 14 years old, with a mental health problem, an 18-month wait is a terrifically long time.

“And what for? These ethereal geniuses, the masters of capitalism, have only made all those cuts to double our national debt.”

He thanked BFAWU for its continued support for Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn but reminded them soberly that “it’s going to take an awful lot of work” to rebuild the country.

Mr Mearns also accepted a £100 charity donation from the union, that he said will be given to foodbanks in his constituency of Gateshead.
