CHINA: US President Donald Trump has been mocked by Chinese media for his plans to impose tariffs on Chinese goods.

Mr Trump accused China of “intellectual copyright theft” and announced a 25 per cent tariff on $50 billion of Chinese goods. 

After China announced similar tariffs in response, Chinese media said of the US president that “wise men build bridges but fools build walls.”

GREECE: Prime minister Alexis Tsipras survived a vote of no confidence on Saturday, brought after he settled a name dispute with neighbouring Macedonia, rattling Greek nationalists.

Mr Tsipras and his Macedonian counterpart Zoran Zaev brought an end to a 27-year row after agreeing on the name the Republic of North Macedonia.

The no-confidence motion was tabled by Greek opposition party New Democracy and was rejected by 153 votes to 127, paving the way for yesterday’s historic signing ceremony.

AFGHANISTAN: Kabul extended a ceasefire agreement with the Taliban at the weekend, which was observed by both parties over the Eid festival period.

President Ashraf Ghani called for the Islamist extremists to enter peace talks with the government as Taliban members embraced security officials, posing for selfies after the new agreement was announced.

However 25 people were killed in a suicide attack in Nangarhar on Saturday. Isis claimed responsibility for the attack.

RUSSIA: Mexican football fans were among at least eight pedestrians injured after a taxi mounted a pavement in central Moscow on Saturday.

Police arrested the driver, who fled the scene, fearing the angry crowd would kill him. He explained how he had been driving for 20 hours and hit the accelerator instead of the brake.

The area close to the Kremlin was busier than usual as Russia hosts the Fifa World Cup.
