PALESTINE: Israeli warplanes bombed more than two dozen sites in the besieged Gaza Strip overnight on Tuesday, prompting rocket fire by Palestinian fighters yesterday morning.

At least three Palestinians were wounded by the Israeli attacks, but no injuries were reported in Israel from the rocket and mortar fire.

Israeli occupation forces in the West Bank shot a man in the back while he was driving his car near Bethlehem.

AFGHANISTAN: Taliban insurgents have killed 30 government soldiers in attacks on two checkpoints, officials said yesterday.

The extremists carried out a large assault on both positions in Badghis province from several directions. The fighting began on Tuesday night but continued into yesterday morning.

In neighbouring Farah province, Taliban gunmen killed four policeman and injured five.

MEXICO: Press freedom groups have documented over 45 attacks on journalists since January in the run-up to elections scheduled for July 1.

Reporters Without Borders and Mexico’s Civic Proposal group said things had worsened as the elections near.

Over 100 election candidates and other politicians have been assassinated since last September.

SWAZILAND: Absolute monarch Mswati III summoned his “royal kraal” yesterday, apparently getting ready to dissolve parliament and replace it with another puppet assembly.

The Communist Party of Swaziland branded the gathering “merely an event meant to satisfy Mswati’s royal appetite to be worshipped by the poverty-stricken population.”

It said the parliament has “only helped to suppress and oppress the people of Swaziland, while embezzling public funds.”
