CAUCASUS: Fighting has broken out between Armenia and Azerbaijan over the disputed region of Nagorno-Karabakh.
Armenia said it shot down two Azerbaijani helicopters yesterday and hit three tanks with artillery, a claim Azerbaijan rejected, though it reported “military losses.”
Armenia said Azerbaijani fire had killed a woman and a child. Russia said it was “conducting intensive contacts” aimed at ending hostilities.

SWITZERLAND: A proposal to limit immigration from the EU has been rejected, referendum exit polls suggest.
Swiss were voting on a number of proposals on immigration, childcare, military procurement and wolf-hunting.
Swiss broadcaster SRF said voters rejecting limiting the number of EU citizens allowed to live and work in the country by 63 per cent to 37 per cent.

CHINA: Sixteen miners have died from carbon-monoxide poisoning in a coal mine in the south-west.
The mine in Qijiang district, Chongqing municipality, belongs to a local energy company and an investigation is under way. One miner was rescued and is in hospital.

KASHMIR: Pakistan said yesterday that one of its soldiers has been killed by cross-border fire from India.
Its army said it had returned fire and caused “substantial damage” to Indian border posts.
Pakistan says India has violated a 2003 truce along the region’s disputed border more than 2,000 times this year. India blames Pakistan for outbreaks of violence along it.
